Gentle birdsong and the rumbling of engines are just a few of the sounds you hear as Pioneers Post reporter David Lyons takes you on a marine voyage from Glenelg on the Scottish mainland to the Isle of Skye.

The trip is courtesy of The Isle of Skye Ferry CIC, a social enterprise that owns and operates the last manually operated turntable ferry in existence. It connects rural communities, provides training opportunities and creates living wage jobs, as well as helping to grow the surrounding economy by sourcing goods and services from local businesses.

Last year, the business won the SEUK Social Enterprise of the Year award and Scottish Social Enterprise of the Year award.

Listen to David as he speaks to the people behind the award-winning social enterprise and finds out:

  • How the ferry supports the local economy and brings “vibrancy to the community”
  • Why the region’s ageing population poses a challenge for the company’s workforce
  • How the business sustains itself financially by creating new income streams
