As Director of Impact for Acumen, Tom leads the organization’s global work to gain a richer understanding of the how and why of creating impact through patient capital investing. Tom has oversight of Acumen’s work in metrics, and works with Acumen’s portfolio team to deepen our knowledge of social impact prior to and throughout our investments. He also supports our investees to maximize the impact of the services they provide, and leads original impact-focused research into individual companies and the sector as a whole.
Prior to Acumen Tom worked for the UK Department for International Development (DfID), first as Country Economist in Nigeria and subsequently leading its private sector and climate change teams in Ethiopia where he oversaw the design and implementation of new development programs worth $250m. Tom has also worked as a diplomat for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and as an economic advisor within the UK Government Equalities Office, where he helped shape Government’s commitments to tackle inequality, including work on the Discrimination Law Review. Tom began his career working at Credit Suisse focused on equity derivatives.
Tom holds a BSc (Hons.) in Economics and Econometrics from Nottingham University and a MSc (Distinction) in Economics with reference to Africa from the London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
